Program description:

In the field of the discipline of fine arts and art conservation, doctoral students gain in-depth knowledge of visual arts and artistic creation. Education is carried out through participation in lectures, seminars developing their skills and competences and through internship opportunities in academic and cultural centers. One of the most important elements of doctoral student education are their own artistic researches, achievements and publications. Creative studies, and artistic work is carried out with the use of the university infrastructure and with the support of the interdisciplinary didactic potential of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.

Research topics are selected individually due to its artistic and scientific potential and consistency with the interests of the doctoral student. It can cover art and design topics or explore issues on the border of various media.

Graduate profile:

Graduates of the doctoral school within the discipline of fine arts and art conservation are experienced artists and have qualifications to continue artistic and research activities as experts in their field. In particular, graduates are prepared to work at universities with an artistic profile and in cultural institutions in the country and abroad.

  • Long-standing artistic director and curator of the Białystok INTERPHOTO photography festival (multiple editions 2013–2024), curating exhibitions of artists including Igor Savchenko, Stanisław Woś, Anton Solomoukha, Stefan Wojnecki, Heikki Leis and Sigrid Viir.
  • Juror of numerous international portfolio reviews and competitions, including KaunasPhoto (Lithuania), Riga PhotoMonth (Latvia), the Latvian Museum of Photography exhibition contest, and the PIX.HOUSE Talent of the Year competition.
  • Over 40 individual exhibitions since 1989, in venues across Poland and abroad (Bratislava, Dresden, Kaunas), and participation in numerous group exhibitions internationally (Berlin, Rotterdam, Tallinn, Brescia, Yokohama, Budapest, Vilnius).
  • 2014 / 2022 Co-curator of the Anastomosis exhibition, Great Aula, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
  • 2024 Author of the publication "From Postmodernism to Critical Art" in European Journal of Media, Art and Photography, 12(1), 6–43; further publications in Kwartalnik Fotografia and a 2025 post-conference chapter co-financed by the Minister of Culture.
  • 2024 Curator of the German photography exhibition "Photographs from the Schupmann Collection" at the Białystok Historical Museum, and juror of the INTERPHOTO Grand Prix international photography competition.
